They weren’t going anywhere.

Way wanted answers and if Maggie didn’t get her tail here fast, he’d get those answers himself.

“Roll with me,” he said to Roni.

Without waiting for a response, he turned and stepped away from the cover of the house. The blond guy spotted him and his shoulders flew straight. The other guy had his back to Way and after seeing the blond’s reaction, whipped his head around.

“Oh man.” He lifted his hands to his skull. “That hurt.”

“Who the hell are you?” the other guy asked.

Way held up his hands. “Whoa, fellas. Relax. I was driving by and saw the truck. It's a beauty.”

The jacked guy dropped his hands from his head and blew out a long breath while the other guy eyed Way.

“Uh, yeah,” the blond said. “It's my daddy's. Rebuilt it himself.”

Roni, apparently not satisfied staying hidden, was suddenly in motion, joining Way. Before the blond—definitely paranoid this guy—could react, Way jerked his thumb at her. “This is my girlfriend. Roni.”

Hellos were exchanged and Way had to give these dumbasses credit because—unlike most horny twenty-something guys— they didn't give Roni's curvy body any long looks.

Which only cemented Way’s opinion that they were idiots.

The sound of a car door slamming drew Way’s attention to the street where his sister had parked her cruiser behind his SUV and was making her way to the driveway.

“Boys,” he said to the idiots, “we have company.”

They looked at each other and shrugged. “Who?” the blond asked.

He pointed down the driveway. “The sheriff.”

“Shit,” the hungover one said.

He could say that again.

Roni let out a laugh. “You’re not kidding. In fact, let me give you a tip. Don't mess with her. And you sure as hell shouldn't lie about stealing my Santa last night.”

The screen door swung open again and Mrs. Royce appeared. She locked eyes on Way, then her nephews. “What’s going on?”

Clearly the sight of visitors in her yard wasn't sitting well, because she propped her hands on her hips and pinched her face tight. No doubt ready to pitch a hissy fit with a tail on it.

“Hello, again,” Roni said.

Before the old bat could respond, Maggie reached them, angling in front of Way and Roni for a clear view of the door.

“Good morning, Mrs. Royce,” she said. “I need to speak with your nephews.”

“What’s this about, Sheriff?”

When Helene peered out over Mrs. Royce’s shoulder, the blond guy groaned.

“Shit,” the hungover one said again.

Way laughed. He couldn’t help it. The glare his sister threw him nearly shrunk his balls, so he shut the fuck up and let her do her thing.

“I'm sorry,” Helene said. “Did you say you need to speak with my sons?”

Maggie, ever the professional, stood with her hands at her sides her posture straight but not confrontational. “Yes, ma'am. An item was stolen from Ms. Fenwick's porch last night. Her security video showed what looked to be,” she pointed at the truck, “this vehicle in front of the home. I’ll need to know where the boys were last night between 9:30 and 10:00 p.
